There was a time when telling the time and making a ‘phone call meant picking up a telephone and staring at a clock on the wall.  Then there was a revolution!  We suddenly got miniature clocks that were strapped to our wrists.  They were called watches.  But it didn’t stop there!  When mobile ‘phones appeared, they had little clocks on them too.  But would it end there?  Oh no.  You bet your bottom €uro, ¥en and Dollar it wouldn’t.

Because now, some bright spark is going to try stopping us from looking at clocks on ‘phones and make us ‘phone people from watches.  Yes!  You read that correctly.  We now have the … wait for it … smartwatch!  (We bet they were up all night thinking of that one…)

Confused

Those cheeky wags at Samsung have kicked it all off.  They’re coming up with a flexible screen that wraps around the wrist.  Other parts are made from metal and synthetic materials and they reckon about 5million will be flogged in 2014.  They’re also banging on about it being the most important bit of kit since the iPad.

But with the Google “smartglasses” not exactly setting the world on fire, are companies now getting a bit desperate on new ways to create “smart” devices?  Do we really want to be raising our wrist to our ear every time the ‘phone rings?  You could end up looking like an overtired medic who has confused listening for the heartbeat with checking for a pulse.

Silly

And what if you’re an accomplished martial artist?  You could be severely concussed every time you check your messages.  It’s all quite silly really and makes one long for the days when we used to look at a watch and answer that thing with a big dial and an annoying bell.  It was also nice to occasionally be “un-contactable”.

We can live in a dream world and reminisce about how life was much simpler in the past, however, technology will continue to advance, fascinate and occasionally annoy.  Would we really want to go back to the days when we didn’t have a smart ‘phone?  Of course not.

Perhaps.
